Mini or Full? How to Choose the Photography Session That Fits Your Story

The Sessions

I get this question all the time: What’s the difference between a mini session and a full session? And more importantly, which one should you book? Honestly, both are great options. It narrows down to what’s the best fit for your family, your season of life, and your schedule.

Here’s what you need to know:

What’s a Mini Session?

Mini sessions are quick, 10–15 minute photo sessions held on a specific date at a location I’ve chosen. Think of them like a photo pop-up, short and sweet, with a set number of time slots.

Pros:

Mini sessions have become super popular, especially with families who want updated photos, without the full session price tag. Here’s why they work so well:

  • They’re fast. No long commitments—just 15 minutes of fun, focused photography.
  • Budget-friendly. Minis are a lower price point, which makes them more accessible for multiple sessions throughout the year.
  • Great for kids. Little ones don’t always have long attention spans. Minis are ideal for keeping things short and sweet before the wiggles kick in.
  • Perfect for seasonal updates. Want fall leaves, holiday cards, or spring blooms? Minis are great for marking the seasons.
  • Surprising variety. Even in 15 minutes, I’ll guide you through all the essential combos: family together, each parent with the kids, siblings, and more.

Cons:

Of course, the quick format comes with some trade-offs:

  • Not ideal for every situation. If your child takes a while to warm up, or you want extended family included, a full session is probably a better fit.
  • You don’t choose the date or location. These are set by me and announced in advance.
  • Limited spots. Minis are only offered seasonally and fill up fast. Once they’re gone, they’re gone.
  • No multiple backdrops or extra time.

What’s a Full Session?

Full sessions are longer and more personalized. You and I work together to choose the date, time, and location that best fits your vision. These sessions usually run about 45–60 minutes (sometimes longer) and give us time to settle in and explore.

Pros:

Full sessions are perfect when you want a more personalized, relaxed experience:

  • You choose the date, time, and location. Want to shoot at your favorite park? Or maybe in your backyard at sunset? Done!
  • More time = more comfort. If your kids need time to warm up or you just want a no-rush vibe, full sessions give us that space.
  • Deeper storytelling. Full sessions allow us to document real, candid moments and a wide variety of settings.
  • Additional final images. With more time comes an abundant gallery to fall in love with.

Cons:

Of course, full sessions aren’t for everyone:

  • More of an investment. They’re more expensive and take more time – both for the shoot and the prep.
  • Limited weekend availability. Since I only take on a few full sessions each weekend, they tend to book out quickly, especially during peak seasons.
  • Not always the best fit for fast-paced kiddos. If your little ones thrive in short bursts, a mini might be more their speed.

So, Which Should You Choose?

It really comes down to your goals and what works best for your family right now. If you’re looking for a quick refresh of your family photos, or your toddler has a strict 15-minute limit on cooperation—mini sessions are an awesome choice. If you’re hoping to slow down, include more variety, or let your kids really settle into the moment, a full session might be the better fit.

Either way, you’ll walk away with beautiful, love-filled memories captured in photos that feel like you.
